Giorgos Markopoulos

Mayor of Galatsi

George Markopoulos was born in Messinia in 1974.

Since his school years he lives and works in Galatsi.

He studied "Business Administration & Management" at the University of Piraeus and holds a Master's Degree in "Business Administration" from the University of Piraeus, while he is a PhD candidate at the Department of Public Administration of Panteion University.

From 2002 to 2010, he served as a Municipal Councillor in the Municipality of Galatsi, while he has worked as a Councillor in the cleaning sector of the Municipality of Athens for 5 years.

In the first 4 years he took the position of Deputy Mayor of Sanitation and in the next 4 years he was elected first in crosses of preference as a Councillor of the Opposition.

In the 2014 elections he was elected Mayor of Galatsi as head of the combination "Galatsi - Self-government for the People" and voluntarily resigned from the position of Managing Director of a Multinational Joint Stock Company, in order to devote himself exclusively to his self-governing obligations in the Municipality of Galati.

In the May 2019 municipal elections he was re-elected from the first Sunday with a percentage of 61.34% and in November 2019 he was elected President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Attica (P.E.D.A.).

Alongside the Municipality, he participates in decision-making issues of supra-local importance, which have to do with Local Government in general. In this context:

He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of PETA S.A., the development company of all municipalities in the country, established by KEDE, the Deposits & Loans Fund and the Union of Greek Regions.

He is a member of the seven-member Council of Metropolitan Planning of the Ministry of Environment, which has the competence to monitor the implementation, to propose adjustments, supplements and specifications of the regulatory plans of Athens and Thessaloniki, to advise on the Local and Special Spatial Plans and the important projects and interventions taking place in both Attica and Thessaloniki.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities for the Protection and Regeneration of Turkovounia (SPAT)

He is married and has a son.
