Vladimir Prebilič

Vice President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities

Dr Vladimir Prebilič was born on 21 May 1974. He graduated in history and geography at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. In 2001, he finished his Master's degree at the Faculty of Social Sciences, where he also got his Doctorate in defence studies in 2004. Today, he performs his mayoral duties on a non-professional basis, and works as an associate professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

He has been active in local politics for several years. He was municipal councillor and the president of the Board for finances and economy of the Municipality of Kočevje from 2002 to 2006, and the deputy mayor from 2003 to 2006. In 2010, he first ran for mayor of the municipality and was elected in the second round. In 2014, 2018 and in 2022 he was elected in the first round with the very high support of all voters. He likes to point out that he earned the voters' trust during his first two mandates, which brought many changes to the municipality.

During the fourth mandate he was bestowed, he will continue to work on his mission to ensure all individuals in different groups can lead a good quality of life. He pursues this goal by investing in the environment and sustainable development, by fostering a creative atmosphere, and establishing the right conditions for business development, which leads to new jobs with a higher added value. The new mandate will also pay special attention to young people.

Dr Vladimir Prebilič is also a chairperson of the presidency of the Association of Municipalities of Slovenia, president of the Community of Municipalities of Slovenia, member of the East Slovenia Cohesion Region, as a representative of the South-East Slovenia, representative of the Republic of Slovenia in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities at the Council of Europe, and regularly holds lectures on the encouragement of democracy at local level, and on ethical behaviour of local officials. He has also been active in national politics. In the 2006–2008 period, he was a personal adviser for internal affairs to the president of the Social Democrats party, Borut Pahor, and from 2008 to 2011, he worked with the Office of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, on the study and promotion of patriotism among young people. In 2022, he ran for the President of the Republic of Slovenia himself.

He balances his work by being a family man - a husband and proud father of two daughters. In his free time, he is also a passionate collector and reader of comics.
